Friday Free Tech Support (01-14-2011)

Every Friday, I answer Tech Support Questions submitted by our readers:

Todd from Allentown writes:

“How can I stop my computer from going into hibernation?”

ANSWER:  There is a very quick and easy way to do this. At the “Command Prompt”, type in the following:

powercfg -h off

then hit enter. There is no need to reboot your computer, and any existing hibernation file will be deleted. Conversely, if you wish (in the future) to enable hibernation, open the Command Prompt and type in:

powercfg -h on

(NOTE: To open the Command Prompt, Go to Start, Accessories, then Command Prompt, or type “cmd” (without the quotes) in the “Run” box)

Katherine in Newville writes:

“I am getting vertical white lines when I print on my laser printer. What might be causing this”

ANSWER: You may have a dirty transfer corona which should be cleaned before trying other more serious or expensive fixes. You may also have a blocked laser beam or LED, which would require you to dust and remove any debris from the optical components such as the laser aperture or LED(s)

Ted in Dover writes
:

“I have an older computer that fails to boot when I power it on, but will boot when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del. What should I be looking for?”

ANSWER:  It is probably a bad power supply.  A good signal from the power supply isn’t present, or might be at the wrong voltage, or is being sent at the wrong time. You need to replace the power supply with a newer/better engineered model.
