Intel to transfer $1.5 Billion to NVidia Over Five Years

HardMac's Lionel reports that in November 2009, Intel had agreed to pay AMD $1.25 Billion to make the latter's complaint for unfair competition go away, and now Intel has now reached a similar compromise with NVidia, to which Intel will transfer $1.5 Billion in installments until 2016 in order to stop legal proceedings launched by NVidia against them.

The Nvidia complaint alleged unfair competition, primarily regarding Intel refusing to license NVidia's graphics chipsets on their Nehalem and later processor architectures - a move that has significantly altered and to some degree hindered Apple notebook evolution significantly.

Don't like the App Store? Delete it!

MacFixIt's Topher Kessler says:

The new Mac App Store can be a useful way to find software for OS X, but a few people have expressed their dislike of the store and prefer to not have it on their systems. Some have even avoided updating to OS X 10.6.6 to prevent the store from being put on their systems,.... but if you remove the store then the system will revert back to the old setup....

Mac OS X v10.6.6 Update Cools Down Hot-running MacBook

AppleTell's Charles Moore says he hasn't been an entirely happy camper in Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard for several reasons, but largely because it has made his MacBook run substantially hotter than it did in OS 10,5 Leopard, which has resulted in the cooling fans running almost all the time.

However, Moore relates that after installing the OS X v10.6.6 update the MacBook is now running in the Leopard-esque low to mid-60s C range, or even cooler.

10 Must-Have Free Apps in the Mac App Store

AppStorm's David Appleyard says:

The Mac App Store has brought a few new fantastic releases, but the majority of software stealing the show has been around for some time. And although these brilliant applications aren't new, they are worth mentioning once again for new Mac users, and those who need a quick reminder.

Today I'll be showcasing ten of my favourite free Mac App Store apps. These wonderful pieces of software won't cost you a dime, but will go a long way towards improving and refining your Mac experience...

Apple's Mac App Store Arrives And The World Doesn't End

ZNet blogger David Morgenstern says:

No Chicken Little, the sky didn t fall with the arrival of the Mac App Store the other day. And neither did the Mac software market. Developers even appear to be mostly understanding of the proposition.

How The Mac App Store Will Change Buying Forever

Mac 360's Ron McElfresh observes that the first version of Apple's Mac App Store is revolutionary and simple, marking the beginning of a rapid change in how Mac users find, buy, install, and update apps, with the trend toward lower prices, but some pothole filled rocky roads ahead.

Keyboards For Number Crunchers

MacGroup-Detroit's Phyllis Evans says:

I've managed to go through a bunch of keyboards over the years, from straight to ergonomic, but the one thing I've always looked for is one with a good numeric keypad. I'm a number cruncher, by trade, and when you are accustomed to using a 10-key adding machine (calculator to the younger generation), it's hard to adapt to a laptop keyboard or the new Apple Bluetooth keyboard. I've had my original Apple Bluetooth keyboard for 7 years, and it's finally starting to have occasional sticking problems....

After looking at a bunch of keyboards, wired and wireless, I decided to go with Apple's wired Keyboard with Numeric Keypad.....

TV and PCs Highly Harmful To Heart Health

TGDaily's Kate Taylor reports:

Four hours' screen time a day more than doubles the risk of a heart attack, according to scientists at University College London.

The team says the danger appears to be independent of how much exercise a person gets when away from the screen, but suggests that metabolic factors and inflammation could cause a link between prolonged sitting and the risks to heart health.

Creativity Different launches a Kickstarter Project - the mBrace For MacBook Pro

Boston based startup venture Creativity Different announces the mBrace, a simple and stylish accessory for your Macbook Pro designed to improve the comfort and convenience of carrying a notebook around the office, on campus or anywhere you take your Mac.

image

The mBrace, made from a high quality Acetal plastic and incredibly strong Uretek fabric, easily and securely attaches to a Macbook without affecting any of its typical uses. You can leave it on your Macbook Pro all the time because even with the mBrace attached, the Macbook Pro still fits nicely in most bags and sleeves with no problem. It even fits with most covers and cases attached. But just in case, the mBrace detaches as effortlessly as it attaches to your notebook. And as a bonus, when attached the handle can rest underneath the Macbook Pro to provide an angled keyboard and ventilation prop.

image

The mBrace is the first project for Creativity Different, a startup venture with the mission to designs and manufacturers innovative and stylish mobile accessories. Creativity Different intends to leverage Kickstarter to raise financing for manufacturing costs through donations. As an incentive, each donor of $30 or more will receive a complimentary mBrace when they are available to the public (effectively a pre-order). Creativity Different anticipates a late spring 2011 release of the mBrace. The Kickstarter approach is all or nothing. If Creativity Different cannot generate enough interest (2500 pre-orders) by Feb 10th, none of the donors will be obligated and the project will not be funded.

image

"I am really excited about this opportunity to finally bring the mBrace to life and I am equally excited to have discovered the Kickstarter platform and community that made this opportunity possible." says Terrance Kirkwood, founder of Creativity Different.

Have you ever heard anybody say that paper outlets, like newspapers, magazines and books, will soon be extinct? While we have seen some newspapers and magazines move to digital services, it s still hard to imagine a world without paper books. However, this has partly become a reality with devices like the Kindle and the iPad....

Have you made the move yet? I have owned a Kindle for a few months now and I have come to love the little device. Whatever device you use, you ll need some sort of app on your Mac to buy and interact with these eBooks. Here are some of our recommendations....
